What to Do When You Are Tired of the Status Quo
Being vulnerable sucks. Putting yourself out there, danging over the cliff of public scrutiny like Simba over Pride Rock, is terrifying. Growth is difficult.
However, the alternative is just as uncomfortable. Stagnation can feel like a vise grip. I often have the sensation of being too big for my skin when I am in transition, much like the giant alien roach from Men in Black that stuffed himself into that poor farmer’s body.
So, what can you do when you are in that awkward place between, I can’t do this is and I’m not ready? Stretch! Take a deep breath and do something. It doesn’t have to be big, but it does have to be productive and contribute to your new goal.
Each time I did something new with this blog, whether it was posting on Twitter, Facebook, or inviting others to follow me, I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and pressed the button, usually while humming something nonsensical. Why? Because I am dramatic and it helped. But also because I needed to stretch without overthinking the task.
I want to be known for my work, but not recognized. Expanding my blog, creating a personal brand, and being on the major social media forums increases the potential for my big fear to come true. Being on social media is a stretch for me, but I have to weigh my goals against my fears.
As tempting as it is to stay safe, you cannot be Edgar The Bug, all squished and uncomfortable in your own space. Eventually you will need to make the transition. Unless you are as brave as a snake and ready to shed your current skin completely, try stretching first. Do a little at a time. Join the spin class. Get a few beta readers for that book you just finished. Whatever move you make, be sure it is intentional, productive, and conducive to your goal.
